St. Mary's City was the first county
seat and is the oldest town in Maryland. Historic St. Mary's City is a National Historic
Landmark. It is one of America's best-preserved archeological sites.
While the original city does not stand, archeologist and historians have
worked to re-create and discover many of the houses, roads, paths, and
public buildings that stood here in the 17th century. A state house
was built here in 1666. A second state house was built in 1676.
This state house was demolished, and its bricks were used to build Trinity
Episcopal Church which stands in St. Mary's City today. The state
house seen on the grounds today is a replica of this second state house. Come see for
yourself. Discover St. Mary's City and the rich Maryland history will
unfold. |
